5 Points: 1. Action, 2. Emotions, 3. Vision…

Hi Reader

There are five points to your North Star. These five areas are vital to better understanding yourself so you can develop better leadership habits and processes for business and life.

1. Habits

Action is a double-edged sword. Action helps you move forward, but it can be hard to take action because you aren’t certain of the next step. What should you focus on first? Planning or executing. That’s why processes are so important. You slowly build the habit and improve it as you go.

Building the habit of doing something small and seeing how it works can help you overcome procrastination. This is why process calibration is important. You can see what went well and what you need to adjust. If it bombed, you need to understand why. If it was a great success, you also need to understand why.

You shouldn’t test another idea until you review the data from your current hypothesis so that you can make some tweaks to hopefully get a slightly better result next time.

2. Leadership

One of the benefits of digging into your employee’s thoughts and emotions is seeing how they span many areas of their lives. It’s hard to feel energized when you truly don’t enjoy your work. This realization can be life-changing if coupled with support. Too often, a manager will hear this from an employee, but they gloss over it because it means that they might have to find another employee. We hear what we want to hear instead of seeking the truth and making decisions that are the best for the employer and the employee.

3. Inspiration

“Vision without action is merely a dream. Action without vision just passes the time. Vision with action can change the world.” - Joel A. Barker

4. Reflection (Journal prompt)

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever been given?

5. Research

In 2017 the State of the Global Workplace report by The Gallup polling organization reported that 15% of employees worldwide are engaged in their job, while 67% are not engaged, and 18% are actively disengaged. That means 85% of employees worldwide are not engaged or actively disengaged. (1)

If you prioritize the work too much, you’ll burn out. If you don’t track your progress, you lose focus. I would love to understand how you focus on work that matters in this short 2-minute survey.

Hi Reader There are five points to your North Star. These five areas are vital to better understanding yourself so you can develop better leadership habits and processes for business and life. 1. Habits Understanding our beliefs is the best way to improve our careers. For example, to be more engaged in meetings, we must believe we should take notes. If we believe that we need to take notes to be more effective, then we are more likely to actually do it. We don't change because we don't think...

Hi Reader Happy Valentine’s Day! If you have someone special in your life, I hope you make some time to explain why they are so special to you. If you aren’t currently in a relationship, reach out to a close friend and let them know why they are special to you. Just making time to share appreciation for a loved one boosts the dopamine in your brain and the person you share your gratitude with. It's a win-win for you and them. 1. Habits Making time to document your patterns is very helpful....

Hi Reader There are five points to your North Star. These five areas are vital to better understanding yourself so you can develop better leadership habits and processes for business and life. 1. Habits I’m often caught in my habitual patterns of thinking, which hold me back from seeing new opportunities. A few years ago, I decided to focus my thoughts on being more grateful. When I dug into gratitude, I became more joyful. When I dug into love, I became more loving. Where your thoughts go,...
